چکیده

Remittances, Liquidity Constraints and Human Capital Investments in Ecuador Over the last decade Ecuador has experienced a strong increase in financial transfers from migrated workers, amounting to 6.4 percent of GDP and 31.5 percent of total exports of goods and services in 2005. This paper investigates how remittances via trans-national networks affect human capital investments through relaxing resource constraints and facilitate households in consumption smoothing by reducing vulnerability to economic shocks. In particular, we explore the effects of remittances on school enrolment and child work in Ecuador. Identification relies on instrumental variables, exploiting information on source countries of remittances and regional variation in the availability of bank offices that function as formal channels for sending remittances. Our results show that remittances increase school enrolment and decrease incidence of child work, especially for girls and in rural areas. Furthermore, we find that aggregate shocks are associated with increased work activities, while remittances are used to finance education when households are faced with these shocks. This suggests that liquidity constraints and vulnerability to covariate risk are especially relevant in rural areas, as it affects household’s investments in human capital of school age children. In this context both child labour supply and transnational remittances serve as coping mechanisms. JEL Classification: I20, J22, O15

Liquidity, Technological Opportunities, and the Stage Distribution of Venture Capital Investments

This paper explores the determinants of the stage distribution of European venture capital investments from 1990 to 2011. Consistent with liquidity risk theory, we find that the likelihood of investing in earlier stages increases relative to all private equity investments during liquidity crisis years. While liquidity is the main driver of acquisition investments and, to some extent, of expansi...

R emittances, defined as the money transfers made by migrants to their families and friends back home, have increasingly captured the attention of policymakers as their magnitude keeps rising and their role in economic development becomes more obvious. Nowhere is this more true than in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), a region in which growth in domestic incomes and capital flows has stag...

Driving Forces of Venture Capital Investments in Europe: a Dynamic Panel Data Analysis

Using dynamic panel estimations, this paper identifies driving forces of venture capital activity for Western European countries. Driving forces might be the liquidity of stock markets, human capital endowment, and labour market rigidities. I find that these factors do not affect expansion stage investments used as a broader definition of venture capital, while they positively affect early stag...
